Eco Orchard Farm

Project

Eco Orchard Farm

The 1.5-acre plot of land that will soon host SAPG’s eco-farm is located in the heart of durian farming country in Balik Pulau, a rural, idyllic corner of bustling Penang. At present, the land is being cleared of weeds and debris in preparation for planting fruits and vegetables; as shown in the illustration below, it will also include space for the system prototype, a sustainable waste management system, a poultry barn, an aquaculture pond, and a visitor lodge.

The eco-farm will be almost entirely self-sustaining: the system prototype supplies electricity to the lodge, the barn, the pond, and the waste processing facility, which breaks down all organic waste from the farm using an emissions-free technology fully compliant with environmental standards set by SIRIM Berhad and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to produce nutrient-rich fertiliser for the fruit orchard and the vegetable garden. It will contribute to the Company’s earnings via selling agricultural products and organising agritourism activities (e.g. guided day tours, overnight stays at the lodge).

More Info:

The purpose of this project is to develop a modern self-sustaining agriculture commune. It is an integrated farm consisting of farm produce utilizing clean & renewal energy technology with eco-friendly waste disposal & management technology and incorporating good agricultural practice amid an edutaining farm stay space. The space will be occupied with landscaped lodges, apiaries, aquaponic, aquaculture, animal husbandry and vertical farming.

The methodology and systems adopted are in line with Green Living Concept with a clear-cut approach and direction that focuses on Green Footprint.

This will be the Showcase & Model for future Duplications.

  • Self-sustaining farm (recycled & ground water, electricity from CET)
  • Increased traffic flow to the Balik Pulau area.
  • Consistent revenue from crops (controlled environment)
  • Diversified revenue from tourism and agriculture
  • Module for duplication
  • Technologies for distribution
  • Demand for countryside home stay
  • Tourist attraction for domestic and international
  • Demand for locally grown produce
  • Untapped niche market for a self-sustaining farm experience and knowledge
  • Showcase the eco-friendly technologies
  • Gain good agricultural practice know-how
  • Global network
  • Promote sustainable environmentally friendly farming techniques and technologies
  • A perfect solution for rural and underdeveloped areas
  • A good agriculture commune concept would be lost
  • Landowners will miss the opportunity of experiencing sustainable environmentally friendly farming techniques and technologies
  • A wasted chance for rural and underdeveloped areas to progress independently
  • A working model is the best showcase of the success and viability on a holistic approach
  • Promotions and networking with all relevant agencies and institutions on the model
  • Providing expertise solutions
  • Feedbacks from visitors, institutions and agencies
  • Accreditation from authorized agencies and experts
  • Duplications
  • Introduction of other sustainable and innovative technologies
  • Diversifying of crops
  • Increasing scale of production
  • Expanding scope of education (Spinoffs into workshops & courses)
  • Expanding the scope of outreach (Online courses, collaboration and affiliation to institutions, government agencies & NGOs)
  • Return of Investment shall be Three (3) years
  • Occupancy rate
  • Visitors
  • Customer satisfaction
  • Revenue growth
  • Lack of visitors
  • Disease / Infection for crops or fish
  • Travel restriction for tourism
  • Natural disasters

The MVP requirements associated with Eco Orchard Farm will be the successful commissioning of the cultivation facilities (in the forms of hydroponics, aquaculture & pisciculture) so as to begin the cultivation of fruit and vegetables, as well as to provide tangible technologies for participants in the farm stay to be introduced to. The Clean Energy produced and the Waste Disposal Machinery will be the farm life supporting systems, ensuring an Eco-friendly entity and moving towards zero carbon footprint.

  • Guided workshops (educational)
  • Guided workshops with the intent of introducing and educating students on the sustainable technologies utilized by GO
  • Workshop/event spaces
  • Workshops or events spaces to facilitate a sizeable group of people (school excursions, corporate team building, weddings)
  • Gift shops
  • On-site shop to allow guests to purchase produce as well as other gifts and souvenirs (beginner hydroponics sets)
  • Merchandising
  • May be developed for sale in gift shop
